For twenty years the objective was a blue link near the top of a page. Increasingly the person asking never sees a list at all — they get a written answer that cites two or three sources, and the sources it cites get the trust and the click. If your site is not one of them, ranking fourth is worth roughly what ranking fortieth used to be.
This is the discipline people are calling AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation). It is not a replacement for SEO. It is the same fundamentals, applied to a reader that parses rather than skims, and that has to decide whether to stake its answer on you.
An answer engine assembling a response about a South Florida submarket is choosing between a national portal, a syndicated article, and whatever local page has actually said something specific. Generic copy — "our experienced agents deliver exceptional service" — contains no extractable claim and will never be cited, because there is nothing in it to quote.
What gets cited is specificity that can be attributed: the milestone inspection trigger in your city, the association questions that decide whether a condo is financeable, the actual months of supply in your county last month, a named neighbourhood and what is true about it. Concrete, checkable, and attached to a source. That is the single biggest change in how this work is done.
Structure does most of the work. A heading that asks the question a person would ask, followed immediately by a direct answer in the first sentence, is dramatically easier for a model to lift than the same information buried in the fourth paragraph of a narrative. FAQ blocks earn their place for the same reason — they are pre-segmented question-answer pairs. Short paragraphs, real subheadings, lists where the content is genuinely a list.
Every service and location page on this site is built that way, including this one.
Structured data does not make you rank. It tells a machine what it is looking at without inference — that this is an organisation with this name, address and phone number, that these are questions and these are their answers, that this is a service offered in these areas, that this page sits at this point in the site. For a local real estate business the relevant types are Organization or LocalBusiness, RealEstateAgent, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList. Implemented carelessly it does harm: schema that describes content the page does not contain is a liability, and invalid or duplicated markup is worse than none.
Answer engines are trying to establish that a business is a real, identifiable entity. That gets much harder when the name, address and phone number differ across your site, your Google Business Profile, your brokerage page and directory listings — or when several near-identical subdomains all claim to be you. Getting the name-address-phone consistent everywhere, consolidating duplicate properties, and keeping a single canonical version of each page is unglamorous and it is most of the battle.
A page nothing links to is a page nothing vouches for. Grouping related pages into clear clusters — a service hub linking to its campaigns, a city page linking to the services relevant there and to neighbouring markets — is how both crawlers and models work out what your site is authoritative on. It is also the cheapest fix on most real estate sites, because the pages usually already exist and simply sit unlinked.
It is the same foundations with a different reader. Crawlability, canonical structure, page speed and internal linking still matter. What changes is that content has to be extractable and specific enough to quote.
No, and anyone promising that is overselling it. Schema removes ambiguity about what your content is, which helps systems use it correctly. Ranking still comes from the content.
Usually hurt. Several indexable properties saying similar things split your signals and compete with each other. Consolidation almost always beats proliferation.
Conventional rank tracking only sees part of it. Watch referral traffic and citations from AI answer surfaces alongside classic organic, and treat branded query volume as the leading indicator.
We can walk your site's structure, meta, schema, internal linking and entity consistency with you and tell you plainly what is holding it back. Scope of any implementation work is agreed on that call.
